He grabbed a gun and shot the thieves who broke into his house, wounding one of them. It happened on Saturday 27 April, around 9.30pm, in Longuelo, near via Astino.

Shoot the thief

The shooter was an elderly 85-year-old, a retired former financier, who lives with his wife in the terraced house targeted by the criminals. According to an initial reconstruction by the State Police officers who intervened on the scene, the two thieves entered the house with their faces covered by a balaclava, after having forced a French window at the back.

The 85-year-old was caught in bed while watching TV (his wife was in another room). The thieves allegedly ordered him to hand over money and precious objects. In response, the 85-year-old grabbed a gun, regularly owned, which he kept under his pillow, and shot at the criminals, who fled.

Two young people arrested

One of the two, injured in the neck, was rescued shortly afterwards, not far from the house of the two elderly couple, by an ambulance called by some residents of the area. The young man, a 27-year-old Albanian, was transported to the Pope John XXIII hospital in Bergamo. The injuries were not serious, so he was taken over by the men of the State Police who took him to prison on charges of aggravated robbery. On Sunday 28 April, his accomplice, a 26-year-old fellow countryman with a criminal conviction, was also arrested and was also taken to the Bergamo prison for the same accusation. The position of the elderly man who shot the two thieves is under investigation.
