Alessandria del Carretto hosts the first Calabrian museum dedicated to rites, folklore and Carnival masks

Everything is ready for the ribbon cutting that will mark the event the birth of the Alessandrino Museum of Masksdedicated to folkloristic Carnival rites.

The historian’s conference room Chidichimo Palace will host, on Wednesday 1st May, the inauguration event of the Alessandrino Museum of Masks, which has its splendid headquarters right inside the prestigious structure.

Strongly supported by the municipal administration led by the mayor Domenico Vuodothe Museum was born from the desire to enhance a characteristic element of the history and traditions of Alessandria del Carretto, that is, the traditional Carnival which decade after decade has conquered an important space in the culture of the area, becoming a tourist and cultural attractor, as well as an identity marker.

The design of the Alessandrino Mask Museum is entrusted to Plan B srlswhich also takes care of the organization of the first inaugural exhibition financed with resources from the PSC Development and Cohesion Plan 6.02.02 provided following the “Cultural Activity 2022” Notice from the Calabria Region – Department of Education, Training and Equal Opportunities – Culture Sector.

The Carnival of Alessandria del Carretto brings a story to lifea narrative made of gestures and rites, in which the Apollonian and Dionysian worlds meet and clash, sublimating the concept of time that transforms everything through the contrast between the phases of life, in a journey that from life reaches death but only as an intermediate stage before rebirth.

Thanks to the passion andI commit of the Połëcënellë Association and its President Antonio Arviatherefore the idea was born to best tell the story of the Carnival of Alessandria but also all the other Italian and international stories linked to the Carnival rites, creating a collection that contains the symbols of these stories made up of rites, dances, processions and moments of community, that is, the masks and costumes of the characters of the folk carnivals which, like a blanket of stars, dot the culture of the places.

The collection of the nascent Museumconstantly growing, has dozens of pieces from all over Italy (and beyond), and a special section dedicated to the Alessandria Carnival, with objects from the past recovered and restored in an action also aimed at protecting the historical memory of the places.

Ribbon cutting on Wednesday 1st May it will be preceded, at 5.00 pm, by an in-depth meeting on the theme of the Carnival of Alessandria del Carretto which will be held in the Conference Room of Palazzo Chidichimo.

Speakers will include Domenico Vuodo, Mayor of Alessandria del Carretto, Antonio Arvia, President of the Połëcënellë Association and the experts Alessandro Arvia and Paolo Napoli. The journalist will moderate the meeting Andrea Mazzotta.
