Mannion, evening at Mamba. McDermott doesn’t turn the other cheek

GILMORE 6.5 – Nine points in 11 minutes, long arms and open hands before the eyes of Olisevicius who, coincidentally, when he finds himself against the former Paok sees his basketball machine jam. So why not leave Gilmore on the field, to try once – once – to change something going on outside the track? No. Gilmore, who is also not Kevin Garnett, sits down at a certain point and doesn’t come back.

MANNION 7 (THE BEST) – Nothing to reproach the Red Mamba, who puts a lot of himself into the match at the cost of going overboard. He scored 18 points in the unfortunate red and white first half, scoring 29 at the end maintaining good percentages both from near (7/9) and from afar (3/8) in addition to the clear path to free throws. To this he adds 7 assists and the same number of fouls conceded, always with minimal protection unlike some other blue players who circulate in Serie A (the coach still shouts for revenge after breaking steps following a “knock” from an opponent). Before the match he addresses the audience with his hands in a heart shape, which is reciprocated. Let’s hope it’s not the last one in red and white in Masnago, because Nico – at least – has always given a good reason to buy the ticket.

ULANEO 5.5 – Appeared with some rebounds and some difficulty holding in the middle of the area. Nothing significant either for better or for worse.

SPENCER 5.5 – Surprised by Paulicap at the start, then as usual forced to have to navigate between closing down the man and helping out opponents who come from outside, missed by the other scorers. He has an impact, yes, but less than other times despite quite good numbers (10 points, 7 rebounds but two blocks conceded): the total, however, is far from being exciting. And the -15 plus-minus nails him in front of a better Paulicap even on the statistics sheet.

WOLDETENSAE 5 – Inside in an attempt to strengthen the defense a little. A move that doesn’t bear fruit because Olisevicius is taller and heavier than Tomas and – perhaps except once – has no problems whatsoever. In attack he plays from the bank, even if the minutes are few and there are perhaps zero truly playable balls.

Openjobmetis saves without applause or compliments: Treviso also passes to Masnago

MORETTI 5.5 – Double figures fueled more by free throws (5 out of 5) than by three-point shots which are often set up well by his teammates. Two out of ten from the field is too small a count to be worth a pass, especially in a similar collective test. Especially because too often we finally expect a basket but it doesn’t arrive, ruining a piece of comeback. At 30’12” he is the most employed winger but also the least productive.

MCDERMOTT 7 – Other than turning – evangelically – the other cheek. On an evening where many show weakness, the captain puts on a tough face, replies with words and body to Bowman, doesn’t retreat an inch and on the opposite side scores 21 points with 7 out of 11 from the field. Maybe it’s obvious and needless to say, but if we had to decide the first player to keep, we would have no doubts pointing to Sean.

BESSON 6.5 – Pretty nightmare start, because in the first quarter he doesn’t get a response right. Then at least he gets his legs back on which allow him to hit the defense from the heart of the area like on positive evenings. 12 points, some applause-worthy plays, some blunders, some good intuition. It’s not a golden evening but with five Hugos on the pitch Varese would probably have won.

BROWN 4 (WORST) – One of the most disappointing single tests of the entire red and white year. That Gabe is subject to ups and downs is well known and, in part, justifiable but a match like this is truly deep red. He always jumps on Olisevicius’ first fake, makes mini-basketball errors when staying on the court (missed help, late movements…), never finds the basket, doesn’t have an idea to make himself useful, disappears in the rebound battle. But he is rewarded with 24 minutes on the pitch against Gilmore’s 11 minutes who also scores and defends. Whether there is an algorithm, a formula, a mechanism, an artificial intelligence behind this move, here it is: it must have been hit by the millennium bug 24 years late.
