On the occasion of 587th edition from the April Fairthe Pro Loco of Andriaas part of the project “Let’s meet at the Pro Loco” organized the meeting “Disappeared professions: the Sterlicchio weaving – ancient factory”edited by the researcher from Andria Nicola Montepulciano. Like the readers of VideoAndria.com will remember, in fact, in addition to being an ecological activist, Montepulciano is also a lover of local history: a passion which, over the years, has pushed him to delve deeper into what he remembered regarding the production and processing sector of cottononce thriving in the city of Andria and forgotten today:
During the initiative – which saw numerous public participation, Montepulciano illustrated the new material collected thanks to the collaboration of other fellow citizens, showing in detail multiple weaving works dating back to the period of Sterlicchio activity as well as further details relating to the weaving. Among them, in addition to a poster with the presence of the unmistakable symbol dedicated to Castel del Montethere is also a reference to a specific type of product: the double twisted cotton treated with ndrantene. Indrantene cotton is a type of fabric produced using a process of special dye which gives the material exceptional resistance to water and dirt, as well as resistance to bleach. The indrantenization process involves the use of reactive dyes that chemically bond to the cotton fibers, creating a long-lasting protective barrier. By double twisted cotton, we mean a product that uses the finest fibers and follows a particular manufacturing procedure which consists of weaving the cotton threads together two by two. Both details noted by Montepulciano confirm both the high quality of the product created in Andria and the evident condition of economical progress which affected at least that specific sector.
