FP Cgil Penitentiary Police – Three handsets and thirty grams of hashish seized by the Penitentiary Police in a cell of the Velletri prison yesterday afternoon

VELLETRI – “Some handsets and dozens of grams of hashish were hidden in a cell in the Velletri prison. It is the result of a search carried out yesterday afternoon in the prison south of Rome by the Penitentiary Police”.

This was communicated by the Regional Coordinator Ciro Di Domenico of the FP CGIL Penitentiary Police: “The operation was carried out in the afternoon. The Velletri penitentiary is among the six prisons in Lazio with less than 70% of the staff in service compared to those present, with shortages especially in the role of Inspectors (38% present) and Superintendents (31% present) and with overcrowding by over 150% (620 inmates present out of a capacity of 400). 32% of the detained population is made up of foreigners.”

Mirko Manna of the FP Cgil Nazionale: “On the prisons of Lazio we have raised the alarm about the lack of staff present and the negligible assignment of new agents expected in the coming months. Evidently the DAP is underestimating the situation in Lazio where it could have easier control, but, as highlighted by the situation in Velletri, the situation is getting out of control of the central administration. The introduction of narcotic substances is a serious threat to prison safety and undermines the attempts at rehabilitation of prisoners into society. Behind the trafficking of drugs and mobile phones, business transactions amounting to millions of euros take place, resulting in the management of power which is fundamental for establishing hierarchies inside and outside prisons. The number of canine units of the Penitentiary Police Corps, which have always demonstrated efficiency and effectiveness, should certainly be increased, just as a greater supply of technological tools would be needed. But first of all, we need an adequate hiring plan to recruit at least excellent agents in the next three years.”
