“Sa Die de sa Sardigna”, the celebratory shirt

A crucial day in the history of Sardinia, for 230 years. On the occasion of the “Sardinian People’s Day” – established by the Regional Council of Sardinia with Regional Law 14 September 1993, n. 44 – Cagliari Calcio remembers the events of the “Sarda Rivolutzione” (in Italian: “Sardinian revolutionary movements” or “Sardinian Vespers”) by presenting the Special Edition Match Shirt created by the technical sponsor EYE Sport, which will be worn in the next match to be played in Sardinia, May 5th against Lecce. An initiative in collaboration with the technical sponsor EYE Sport and which is also part of the partnership with the Tourism Department of the Sardinia Region, to honor the history of Sardinia and its people by celebrating their cultural identity and unity in that precise historical moment.

THE JERSEY
The shirt, characterized by the pixel effect (with colors that recall Giuseppe Sciuti’s work “Entrance of Giovanni Maria Angioy in Sassari”) also proposed on the side part of the shorts and on the back of the socks, has three texts in the Sardinian language that its distinctive elements appear in various places on the playing uniform: the name of the festival, “Sa Die de sa Sardigna”, visible horizontally on the back of the shirt and vertically on the back of the socks; the date “Su 28 de Abrili” inside the crew neck; the phrase “Nara Cixiri” internally on the lower part of the shirt, to reiterate and remember the phonetic formula with which, according to legend, it was easy to identify “the foreigner”. The Piedmontese were blocked by seeing the request formulated “Nara cixiri” (translation: pronounce the word “cece”), anyone who could not pronounce this word well (“cixiri” in Sardinian means “chickpea”) was not “casteddaio” and was therefore destined to be boarded and removed.

HISTORY
April 28, 1794 entered history as “Sa Die de s’aciapa” (trans. “Capture Day”), when the citizens of Cagliari were protagonists of the expulsion of the Piedmontese at the height of what is defined as the “Sardinian Revolution” which began in the previous year and which would last for a three-year period with episodes up to 1812. Those riots were an emblem of the value and dignity of the Sardinian people, exalted by the courage, sacrifice and resistance of our ancestors in the face of the injustices of the rulers, the Savoys . In fact, the riots between the Sardinian bourgeoisie and the feudal lords did not cease and continued even after 28 April 1794. The discontent grew until, in the second half of 1795, the number of revolts increased and the city of Sassari was surrounded. The Savoy Viceroy asked Giovanni Maria Angioy to restore order to the island but he, crossing the island on horseback from Cagliari to Sassari, became better acquainted with the problems and demands of the Sardinians and, country after country, managed to form a group increasingly nourished, definitively espousing the cause of the people and effectively uniting them from south to north, until it was welcomed triumphantly. This episode is represented in Sciuti’s fresco, today present in the assembly hall of the Provincial Palace in Sassari.
