Deaths at work, the appeal of Fillea Cgil Calabria: worrying data

Today, April 28, on the occasion of the World Day for Health and Safety at Work, as Fillea Cgil Calabria “we intend to reiterate that the right to work but, above all, the protection of employment are some of the pillars on which our Constitutional Charter is based, but in our country, unfortunately, the number of injuriesAlso deadlythey are continuous increasejust as cases of professional diseases”. So in a note Simone CelebreGeneral Secretary Fillea Cgil Calabria.

“In the last period we have witnessed real massacres at work, just remember Brandizzo, Florence and lastly the massacre in the Suviana hydroelectric power plant. Massacres that must make us aware that we can win the challenge against fatal accidents only by teaming up with all those involved in every capacity. It is unacceptable that in 2024 people still have to die or get sick at work. The system of sanctions currently in force is not sufficient to contain this phenomenon, especially if controls continue to be so few and not in-depth. We need to do more and better, because the issue, as we have been repeating for years now, is also cultural: information and training moments that involve workers on a permanent basis are needed.”

Inail data

“The data released by Inail last February in a dossier that examines the last five years are clear: from 2018 to 2022, fatal complaints in the workplace are always above 1,000 incidents per year. The available data for 2023 also reports 1041 cases, while those relating to the first two months of 2024 are 119, or 5 more than in the same period of 2023″.

“The most affected sector remains construction. At the same time we can say that there is no lack of economic resources to combat these phenomena, or at least to intervene in the sectors that cause greatest concern. In fact, INAIL recently declared, also for the 2024 budget, a forecast of an economic surplus of 2 billion euros as had already happened for 2023″.

“Wrong approach? We need radical change”

“Isn’t the approach with which our country addresses the issues of health and safety in the workplace wrong? Couldn’t some of these resources be used in a structural way? In fact, if it is painful to note that people still die at work today and that the numbers of accidents and occupational diseases are so high, it is equally disconcerting to note that there are so many dedicated resources that are not used. Can we really think that it is possible to contain such phenomena with buffer measures dictated by the emergency moment, such as that of Florence, and not by the identification of structural strategies? We repeat, a radical change is needed, we need to invest in a culture of safety, starting from schools and not just in the workplace”.
