The province of Sassari is among the least productive areas of Italy in terms of gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, an alarming situation revealed by the Openpolis portal which used 2021 Istat data to compare all Italian provinces. Sardinia, including the province of Sassari, thus emerges as one of the regions with the lowest GDP in the entire national panorama. This circumstance aggravates the economic crisis that the province of Sassari is going through, with an increase in requests for help from the population. GDP is considered a crucial indicator of a region’s economic health, as it measures economic activity and the wealth produced.

In detail, the province of Sassari, despite being the second largest GDP in Sardinia, records only 22,800 euros per capita, a figure which places it well below the national average, particularly when compared to the province of Cagliari, which is stands at a GDP of 28,600 euros per capita. The data are even more disheartening when compared with those of Northern Italy. Milan, for example, stands out with a GDP per capita almost triple that of Sassari, reaching almost 60,000 euros. Bolzano, Bologna and Parma are also positioned much higher, with over 40,000 euros.

The position of the province of Sassari is similar to that of other areas of Southern Italy, such as some Sicilian and Calabrian provinces, reflecting a wider economic gap between the North and the South of the country. These data place Sassari and Sardinia faced with the challenge of reversing this trend and seeking innovative solutions to stimulate economic growth, in order to improve the well-being of citizens and re-establish a leading role in the North West of Sardinia.
