In the public debate “Which job for which tomorrow – The possibility of defeating the conflict between health and work in the midst of the climate crisis” we would have liked to address the topic of work with those in government; with the opposition parties and the unions, comparing the former Ilva cases of Taranto, Gkn and Bagnoli.
The ministers Raffaele Fitto, Adolfo Urso and Giancarlo Giorgetti had been invited to the political debate, which should have taken place at the Archaeological Park of the Greek Walls of Taranto at 10.30 am on Monday 29 April; the secretary of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein; the president of the 5 Star Movement, Giuseppe Conte; the secretary of the Italian Left, Nicola Fratoianni; the spokesperson for Green Europe, Angelo Bonelli and the national confederal and trade unions, as well as USB and LMO.
“To date, M5s, Pd and Usb have responded by communicating their inability to participate in the debate due to mandatory parliamentary and institutional commitments, while the grassroots union Lmo has not hesitated to confirm its presence,” the mayor said in a statement. “A well-known proverb says “asking is legitimate, answering is courtesy”, therefore we thank those who answered us, but, for obvious reasons, we are forced to cancel the scheduled debate”, continues the note.
“Evidently, the Taranto dispute is not among the priorities of politics and the unions, who continue to speak without listening to the proposals that come from the city, persevering undaunted in marking the gap that separates them from those who gave them a mandate, but, above all, maintaining unchanged the aberrant indifference towards the numbers of a macroscopic failure in terms of employment and health. The day after tomorrow, this could have been discussed with those who want to free themselves from this sentence and, perhaps, the reason why they avoid the discussion coincides with our request”, concludes the Free and Thinking Citizens and Workers Committee.
