Sicily | Employment is growing, but not in Syracuse and Caltanissetta, where it is decreasing » Webmarte.tv

The Mestre CGIA research office has published data on employment in Italy.

In 2023, the historic record of employment was reached.

The number of employed people in Italy reached 23.6 million units, 471 thousand more than in the pre-Covid period.

Of these 213 thousand were in the South, which was the part of the country that recorded the highest percentage increase, +3.5 percent.

Among the regions, Sicily is in second place, together with Liguria, with +5.2%.

Only Puglia did better, with +6.3%.

Qualified workers are increasing, but the employment rate remains the lowest in the Eurozone and self-employed workers are decreasing.

“It is a particularly positive moment for our labor market.

Both for the historical record of employed people and for the increase in the number of those who have a permanent employment contract and, finally, also for the increase, especially in the last year, of staff with high levels of qualification ”.

Thus the CGIA report, whose forecasts remain optimistic for next year as well, predicts that the ceiling of 24 million employees will be reached by 2025.

Also last year we reached an incidence of 84 percent of those who have a fixed-term employment contract, 15.57 million out of the total number of employees which is 18.54 million.

Compared to 2019, the number of permanent workers increased by 742 thousand units, equal to 5%, while that of workers with fixed-term contracts decreased by 1.6%, 48 thousand less.

Enna is in third place among the Italian provinces, with +11.2% of employed people.

Only Lecce did better, with +16.5 and Benevento with +12.4%.

The other Sicilian provinces performed well, with the exception of Syracuse and Caltanissetta.

Ragusa is 5th with +9.4, Messina is 6th with +9.1% and Trapani is 8th with +8.6%.

Catania also did well, 11th with +7.3.

Agrigento is 18th with +5.8 while Palermo is in 41st place with +3.1.

The other two Sicilian provinces go against the trend, where employment has decreased and are at the bottom of the ranking, followed only by Sassari and Fermo.

In Syracuse, which is in 104th place in the provincial ranking, employment in 2023, compared to 2019, decreased by 4.3%.

Caltanissetta is worse, following the Arezzo capital with -5.2%.

The Mestre CGIA report also underlines the critical issues, first of all the 61.5% employment rate which places us in last place among the 20 countries of the Euro Area, where the average is 70.1%.

Among the critical issues is the negative trend of self-employed workers, who decreased by 223 thousand, even if the last year recorded a weak recovery.

Finally, the average salary levels are lower than in other EU countries, due to a very low level of labor productivity, a very high NEET rate and a lower employment rate for women across Europe.
