There are 16 million tons of fresh food arriving on Tuscan tables every year, divided between agricultural, food, fishing and aquaculture products, while the tons of frozen foods consumed every year in the region amount to 60 thousand (latest ISTAT findings referring to 2019 and 2021). The data were presented during the Florentine stage of Frigo’N’Motion, the “tour of Italy” dedicated to controlled temperature transport organized by the Interdisciplinary Food and Drug Observatory (Oitaf) – in partnership with Toscandia SpA, vehicle dealer industrial and commercial companies that have been operating for 50 years in Tuscany, Umbria and Sardinia, and which a few years ago launched “Tempo Zero”, the innovative project to support companies facing the energy transition process.

Transporting food to the tables of Italians is the fleet of temperature-controlled vehicles, of which Oitaf has photographed the state of the art, collecting and analyzing the data from the Civil Motorization Office in the ATP Transport White Book, divided by region. In Tuscany there are 6,650 temperature-controlled vehicles, of which 31% are registered in the province of Florence: within this vehicle fleet, 2/3 are LCVs (light commercial vehicles), the others are M-HCVs ( medium and large commercial vehicles).

In this scenario, Tuscany emerges as one of the most virtuous regions in Italy, second only to Trentino Alto Adige. In fact, 48% of LCVs and 59% of M-HCVs are classified Euro 5 and Euro 6, compared to a national average of 40% for LCVs and 50% for M-HCVs. Over 50% of the vehicles circulating in Tuscany are equipped with new technologies for the treatment of exhaust gases, reducing the amount of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere. Furthermore, the towed fleet has an average age of 12 years, compared to the national figure which is over 16 years.
