ANCONA A roar, then another and another. Noises so loud that they brought traders out of their shops and residents out of their homes. “They are vandalizing the Domenico Savio” is the general cry that arose on Friday afternoon from via Torresi. The reason for those bangs? Attributable to the raid by a group of kids, who probably enjoyed shooting some firecrackers in the school complex which has been closed for a long time and has become prey to vandals and stragglers. When the local police arrived, two baby thugs – according to the witnesses’ story – had already escaped. Two others, aged 12, were blocked and taken to the Diving Command, where their respective families were called. The kids, being under the age of fourteen, could get away with a slap on the wrist.

The degradation

It was in the late afternoon that the alarm was raised. Residents and shopkeepers were worried when they heard the bangs in rapid succession coming from the abandoned building in the Savio complex, a skeleton of decay and neglect. Since the main gate overlooking Via Torresi is closed, it is likely that the vandals passed through from the back, where the construction site for the new school is located. There are at least two improvised access points to enter the building. On the entrance door part of the glass was broken, perhaps with a boulder. Inside, you can still see the stacked chairs of the little students, the blackboards, remnants of boxes and other waste. At the back you can enter through a completely broken window, which is accessed after first climbing over a fence and then a windowsill. It is certainly not difficult to get inside the building and do what you want with what is left inside.

Some residents, shortly before the arrival of the local police, saw two children running away. A third tried, but was caught by the officers, with the complicity of a passer-by. The fourth offered no resistance. The children would have been found at the back of the school, on the construction site side of Via Camerano. They couldn’t hold back their tears when they had to follow the agents to the headquarters in via dell’Industria. They returned home with a good lecture and probably the knowledge that they had done something stupid. Both for having entered an unsafe building, and for the barrels that risked causing further damage to a building that should be made safe, considering the state in which it is located (broken windows, waste piled up outside, torn fences) and the Extreme proximity to the Sabin nursery school.

The fire

While the group of kids enjoyed running around in the Savio area, on the other side of the city the changing rooms of the baseball field in via Sacripanti were on fire. The causes of the huge fire that made the premises unusable are not yet clear: the smoke and flames devastated almost every corner. The possibility of malicious intent is not ruled out. First of all because a couple of months ago the same premises had already been affected by a fire, but of smaller dimensions compared to the one that broke out on Friday afternoon. And then, immediately the police, who are investigating the trail of fire, stopped some kids. In turn, they said they saw someone escape from the locker room area shortly before everything inside burned. One thing is certain: the door was closed, but had a panel torn off. If the cause was to be found in the man’s hand, did the arsonists pass by there or throw a firecracker from outside?
