He dies sixteen days after the investment – L’Aquila

THE EAGLE. He passed away in hospital sixteen days after the accident. The L’Aquila Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into the death of Enzo Filippi De Santis, 89 year old surveyor resident in the regional capital, former mayor of Acciano. The magistrate on duty ordered the autopsy, which was carried out late yesterday afternoon by the medical examiner Cristian D’Ovidio. The death is attributable to the serious wounds and internal injuries sustained as a result of the accident. The elderly man had been hit by a Fiat Panda on the evening of April 8th. It was around 10pm when the 89-year-old was crossing the road on Viale di Collemaggio, at the pedestrian crossing, before the intersection with Via Iacobucci, at the Villa Comunale. The car, driven by a 22-year-old from L’Aquila, under investigation (as a matter of course) for vehicular homicide, had hit him head-on. The Carabinieri of the Compagnia dell’Aquila, who intervened on site to investigate and reconstruct the dynamics, had withdrawn the young man’s driving licence. Filippi De Santis was immediately helped by the driver of the Panda and other passers-by until the 118 ambulance arrived and urgently transferred him to the San Salvatore hospital. Here he was immediately admitted to the anesthesia and resuscitation department where, on April 24th, his heart stopped. The clinical picture immediately appeared serious, so much so that the 89-year-old fell into a coma immediately after being taken care of by the doctors.
The Prosecutor’s Office, in order not to leave anything to chance, decided to investigate the matter further and to entrust the task to the coroner for the autopsy examination.
Enzo Filippi De Santis, well known not only in the L’Aquila area, but also in Valle Peligna and Subequana, had been mayor of Acciano in the 1960s. Right in his “his” town, today at 4 pm, in the parish church of Roccapreturo, his funeral will be celebrated. A professional surveyor, awarded in December 2023 for seniority in the register, he was very active and jovial. «He drove the car well and surfed the web», recalls his son Andrew, lawyer and member of the Bar Council. He had lost his wife in the earthquake.
