TERAMO. He managed to pull the truck over in the right lane before giving way. The 60-year-old Polish truck driver who suffered a fatal illness along the Teramo-mare yesterday morning avoided a catastrophic road accident, which probably would have led to even more tragic consequences. The lorry driver had no escape, he died moments after stopping the heavy vehicle he was driving near the service station along the roadway in the direction of Giulianova between the Teramo est and San Nicolò-stadio exits. His last gesture, however, saved other lives. The alarm was raised by some passing motorists who noticed the sudden maneuver of the truck and the driver slumped over the steering wheel. The call for help went out immediately and an 118 crew arrived on site in an ambulance.
Health workers attempted to resuscitate the 60-year-old who, according to initial findings, had suffered a heart attack. There was nothing that the truck driver could do. The illness of the lorry driver and the consequent rescue efforts caused traffic slowdowns along the Teramo-mare with the formation of queues in the direction of Giulianova. The Carabinieri from the operational and mobile radio unit and Anas personnel also intervened on site to regulate traffic and for other obligations relating to the intervention to try to save the life of the 60-year-old. During the operation and until the removal of the truck, in fact, it was necessary to divert traffic onto the overtaking lane.
