«I’m certainly not looking for accommodation or a place in the sun. I’m running for mayor out of love for the city.” Speaking is Modestino Iandoli, former municipal and provincial councilor, today running for the highest seat in Palazzo di Città at Fratelli d’Italia altitude. Historic reference of the Irpinia right, today he will be in Pescara to participate in the programmatic conference set up by his party and meet Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Iandoli, let’s start from the beginning: how did your candidacy come about?

«It arises from a willingness offered, like others, to contribute to the administrative matter. My goal is to write a new page for the city, made up of that transparency and coherence typical of those who have absolutely nothing to be forgiven for. In this sense, I would like to thank the provincial president of the party Ines Fruncillo, senator Antonio Iannone and deputy minister Edmondo Cirielli for their support and kind words for me.”

She is on the field, but the center-right still seems undecided on what to do. What idea did he have?

«I believe that we have a duty to offer a proposal and a presence. I know that in these hours there are reflections underway, both in the center-right and in the civic coalition, but I sincerely hope that we can reach a unitary solution. In short, as our deputy Gianfranco Rotondi also said, I hope that the right synthesis can be found on this position.”

Why did you agree to run?

«Certainly not because I am looking for a job, but because many people, even politically distant from me, have shown me their solidarity by making me understand that the path taken is the right one».

A very current issue concerns the relationship of his coalition with the civic bodies linked to the former mayor Gianluca Festa. What is his position?

«Look, I believe that the duty of politics is to bring together and this does not mean abdicating one’s history and vision. Just as we believe that trials should be held in the courts and not in the streets, therefore, we strongly affirm that the challenge must be launched on the issues. We must be able to interpret the thoughts of the people of Avellino, breaking down the barriers and involving those sensitivities that today take refuge in non-voting. In short, it is necessary to be attentive to needs and feelings, not to nomenclatures.”

He has previously spoken of an issue-based election campaign. What is the priority?

«The main theme is certainly that linked to growth. The city has been decreasing from a demographic point of view for several years and this means that the new generations choose different places to settle and deploy their skills and commitment. Our task is to ensure that all these kids come back and make their contribution to the rebirth of the city. In short, I hope that young people, to whom I am mainly addressing, will be able to rediscover that civil commitment which represents the essential element for giving a future and continuity to a history.”

Your opponent is represented by the center-left. What do you think?

«There is nothing new in that line-up. On the other hand, the discomfort that the city of Avellino finds itself having to deal with comes from afar and certainly did not begin with Festa. This is the reason that makes me say that Gengaro looks to the past. We, on the contrary, are alternative: we have never governed or managed public affairs. We are bearers of a new thought that we want to put at the service of the entire community, not just the one that identifies with the center-right.”

If you were to be elected mayor, what would you do as a priority?

«I would work hard to reassure a city that today finds itself dazed having lost all its points of reference. After that, considering the many problems we have to face, I believe it would be necessary to start a close discussion with all the categories and representatives of the third sector to ensure that the hardship affecting the city can be transformed into a useful proposal for its growth”.
