heavy rains coming, risk of landslides and avalanches

The Regional Functional Center has issued a bulletin of yellow weather warning valid for tomorrow, Sunday 28 April, for a large part of the territory of Valle d’Aosta, with the exception of the border ridge with France and Switzerland. Moderate and locally heavy rainfall is expected. In the Gran Paradiso and Monte Rosa valleys they will be possible tomorrow “medium and large avalanches mainly in non-anthropic areas or phenomena known to be highly frequent”.

In the central valley the criticality concerns, today and tomorrow, slopes and streams, with possible “phenomena of superficial landslides and rockfalls due to soil saturation“. In particular, “given the soil saturation conditions associated with locally intense rainfall, rock falls and superficial landslides can be triggered, causing temporary interruptions to traffic, localized damage to infrastructures, individual buildings and anthropic activities”.

From a meteorological point of view, “a disturbance favors continuous and intense rainfall until tomorrow morning, especially in the south-eastern sectors, and then a marked attenuation in the afternoon. The snow level gradually rises to around 2,000 meters this evening, and significant accumulations occur above 2,000 metres, but below, considering humid and mild air, at around 1,800 metres, an average of around 5-5 are estimated between today and tomorrow. 10 centimeters in the central valley, 15-25 centimeters in the Monte Rosa valleys, 10-20 centimeters in the Gran Paradiso valleys, 5-15 centimeters on the border ridge”.
