The theft that took place last night against the Bar Tabacchi Amore at the foot of the Church of San Giovanni draws attention to the problem of public order in this part of the city but not only.

The owners of the shop who suffered damage of more than 10 thousand not only due to the theft of the goods (cigarettes and scratch cards) but also due to the break-in of the French window through which the criminals entered, complain that the area is totally abandoned to itself and that already at nine in the evening it seems to be the middle of the night because there is no one left. Obviously this allows criminals to act undisturbed.

“We ask for more checks by the police because we feel alone and unprotected and we are afraid” Mr. Elio told us that we went to see him this morning in his bar where obviously nothing else was talked about.

Meanwhile, the police have acquired images from the Municipality’s cameras so that they can trace the perpetrators of the theft.

Mr Elio, however, does not feel confident because the criminal who burned down his place three years ago is now back at liberty. “Unfortunately-continues Mr Elio- I fear that the same thing could happen this time too, for this reason, in addition to the anger at having been robbed, there is also the anger of knowing that in the end the only ones who pay the consequences are us workers who not only wake up every morning at dawn to try to earn enough to get by and we get to the end of the day with great difficulty but we also have to suffer these bad things”

How to blame Mr. Elio, we too have repeatedly denounced the situation of abandonment not only in Modica Alta but in the entire historic center where thefts from businesses are now increasingly frequent and the climate has become unlivable, unfortunately without any type of response.

Law enforcement agencies at all levels complain of a shortage of personnel. However, this is a problem that citizens cannot and must not solve or suffer.
