Perugia, he always shops in Fontivegge, but the credit card belongs to someone else. Caught thanks to the cameras

PERUGIA – He saw his bank account go down, slightly, but often. One, two, five. Ten times. Small shortages and small expenses. But she hadn’t done it. Yet it is her credit card that has been swiped at the POS of various shops, united by a common denominator: they are all in the area of ​​the Fontivegge station.

This is where the investigation by the Perugia postal police started, with the men of the Umbria Cyber ​​Security Operations Center identifying and reporting to the judicial authorities a 30-year-old found using the credit card of the victim of his theft. This is a foreign citizen, legally residing in Italy, therefore considered responsible for the crime of undue use of electronic payment instruments. It was the victim who noticed the shortfalls, with numerous purchases below the threshold being debited from his current account, for which it is therefore not necessary to enter the pin: just swipe the card on the POS and the purchase is authorised. The expenses, in fact, with sixteen undue transactions carried out, were made in various businesses in the area around the railway station: a limited territorial area which made the police believe that the thief could have lived in the immediate vicinity of Fontivegge. The investigations therefore focused on the neighborhood and its shops, with help coming from the cameras. Thus, thanks to the in-depth analysis of the operators of the Cyber ​​Security Operations Center and the viewing of the images recorded by the video surveillance systems of the shops where the purchases were made, the police managed to trace the identity of the thirty-year-old. That he was tracked down on the street by some officers and accompanied to the police station for the ritual activities, at the end of which he was reported for the improper use of the electronic payment card.
Thus ended the misadventure for the victim of the theft, of his card as well as his money, precisely in the area which in recent months has been at the center of raids on credit cards and other small expenses made by those who have used the cards for a long time contactless that up to 50 euros of purchases do not require any security code. You just need to be careful not to overshoot. In that case, it was last September, with traders alarmed by the coming and going of the police asking for camera footage, a forty-year-old from Perugia was arrested who had found in that card, stolen but not blocked, the secret to eating and indulge in small indulgences at someone else’s expense.
