the true riches of Crotone

“For over a year I have decided to live an important part of my existence in Calabria, a beautiful land in every sense of creation but too often unknown to most and mistreated by many. Due to my institutional duties I work full time, both during the day and (when necessary) at night, for the protection, protection and safeguarding of the right to a healthy environment and the enhancement of the biodiversity of terrestrial, river and maritime ecosystems”.

“First as Extraordinary Commissioner of the Regional Agency for the Protection of the Environment of Calabria – (ARPACAL) – then, from 14 September 2023, as Extraordinary Commissioner delegated by the Government of the Site of National Interest (SIN) of Crotone – Cassano allo Ionio and Cerchiara of Calabria. I have no reservations in sharing with dear readers some of my experiences of professional life and human relationships of living between environmental, landscape,
urban and historical ones which, in truth, I did not foresee but which was given to me with my return to Calabria”.

“Life, among the evergreen forests and hills, far from urban centers is not always easy due to the scarcity of services and comforts limited to environmental contexts, typical of the plains and maritime coastal strips. But at the same time, living among the scenic beauty of mountain environments and feeling the genuineness of the people, in one with the paths of agri-food well-being, is a true multiplier of psychophysical strength, unattainable elsewhere”.

“I think, for example, of the Marquisate, with the many villages, castles, basilicas, convents, monasteries, diocesan museums, churches or the historic, well-kept and restored houses of the Ancient Village of Santa Severina, set like a myriad of pearls and precious diamonds on the peak protected by the patron saint Santa Anastasia. The many tourists who visit these enchanting places every day remain breathless with a motionless gaze, fixed on admiring from above the green and lush valley that slopes towards the blue sea on one side and the peaks and massifs of Sila on the other ”.

“This is a taste of the earthly paradise that exists in the province and in the city of Crotone. Returning to the valley, after a day of breathing deeply in the purest air, you immerse yourself in the many waterways in the Neto valley; such important and uncontaminated waters and territories, which gush out and flow clear from the springs at high altitude towards the Ionian Sea, through the many evocative rivers of Calabria and with the majesty of the Neto and Esaro rivers, waterways that make the adjacent countryside”.

“The Esaro, with its transparent and shimmering waters upstream, bathes the territories of the province and the dear city of Crotone, where Pythagoras, the great son of ancient Greece, mathematician, philosopher, scientist, multifaceted scholar, founder of the School of the same name Pythagorean of Mathematical Sciences and Father of the Pythagorean Theorem, she loved walking, bathing and reflecting with her students in the evening.”

“The city and the territories of the municipalities of the province of Crotone, if visited with good intentions and with the desire to grasp the true sense of inner well-being, leave the foreign visitors arriving (increasing in number), speechless, breathing the air and the hospitable culture of millenary Magna Graecia, that Grecanic civilization still visible and enjoyable today by the attentive tourist – cruise passenger who decides to land in Crotone and reach by land or sea, Capo Colonna, Le Castella, the many castles and the wonderful ancient villages still well preserved and maintained ”.

“The “special mission” which has seen me intensely involved and strongly committed body and soul, for seven months now, concerns the implementation of the reclamation interventions and the environmental redevelopment-repair of the areas still to be decontaminated in the City of Crotone and beyond , always with a watchful eye and mind on the territories and groundwater, of the Municipalities of Cassano allo Ionio and Cerchiara di Calabria, still to be kept under strict environmental monitoring and surveillance activities”.

“I am sure and convinced that these territories, disfigured, contaminated, polluted, mistreated and given little attention by those who should have dutifully protected and preserved them for the benefit of future generations, will return more enjoyable and healthier than before”.

“The waters of rivers, streams and the sea must become increasingly suitable for bathing and made environmentally accessible to resident citizens and tourists visiting Crotone and its province every year; the glorious past must represent for the beautiful, smiling and welcoming people of Crotone, a memory full of positive elements, with the belief that the present and above all the short near future, will be filled with cultural, spiritual and economic well-being for the many young people of Crotone and their families”.
