The Cicero-North Syracuse flag football team had the lead in the second half against Syracuse East on Friday, but quickly lost it as the game wound down.
When the Northstars got the ball with 29 seconds left, that’s all C-NS needed to notch a 2-point conversion and beat Syracuse East, 21-20.
“The girls played fantastic,” C-NS coach Stephen Mirizio said. “I’m very proud of the team for coming together as a unit.”
The Northstars have won three of their last four games. The team also redeemed itself on Friday after a season-opening loss to Syracuse East.
“(The previous loss to Syracuse) was a big motivation piece. It’s all about using that momentum going forward,” Mirizio said. “The girls responded well.”
Syracuse was holding onto a 20-13 lead. When the Northstars had just under 30 ticks to score at the end of the game, Mirizio put the game-clinching drive into action.
C-NS went play after play and continually ran out of bounds to stop the clock. With the Northstars set up in the red zone, senior quarterback Mia Sotoperez connected with freshman receiver Hailey Dupra for the touchdown to cut it to 20-19 with 1.5 seconds left in regulation.
Sotoperez then found Elyse Cook in the end zone for the conversion.
Going 60 yards on the final drive, Mirizio said C-NS “executed it phenomenally.”
“We got to this point and trusted each other. It’s about trusting the person next to you, so we made those changes and went for two,” Mirizio said.
C-NS (4-3-1) faces Baldwinsville next Friday at 6:30 pm The Northstars are also looking to bounce back against the Bees after losing to them earlier this season.
“I’m excited. Hopefully, we can build off (Friday’s) win,” Mirizio said.
Syracuse (5-2) also takes on Baldwinsville next. That matchup is at 6:30 pm Wednesday.
