2024 will close above the thousand mark
Legnano – There is a fact that catches the eye when comparing the data from the registry of the Municipality of Legnano with the data that the Lombardy Region has released in relation to the activities of its hospital facilities: according to Palazzo Malinverni, 393 children were born in Legnano during 2023. Few, very few indeed. The data confirms the trend demographic decline which has been going on for some time now: starting from the nineties the city began to age, until the number of elderly people stabilized significantly above that of young people.

According to Palazzo Lombardia, however, in 2023 953 children were born at the Legnano hospital: in recent years, the number has continued to grow, so much so that it is estimated that the 2024 statistics will close above one thousand. Not that the demographic decline does not affect the hospital in via Giovanni Paolo II: simply the head doctor’s department Guido Stevanazzi has become an excellence that attracts users not only from outside Legnano, but also from outside the basin of the 11 Municipalities that belong to the Legnanese district of the West Milanese territorial social and healthcare company. According to an estimate by the Region, a third of the 953 births are from Legnano (and the accounts match those of the Municipality); another third comes from one of the other municipalities in the district, while the others come from outside. And not so much from the area of Magenta and Abbiategrasso, where the Asst boasts two other hospital facilities, one of which (Magenta) has always been a point of reference for the obstetrics and neonatal pathology department, but above all from the municipalities of the lower Varese area. According to statistics, Above all, couples who live in Busto Arsizio, Gallarate and Saronno have their children born at the Legnano hospital. If there is no longer a birth center in Saronno and the choice of families is almost obligatory, so to speak, for those who live in Busto and Gallarate it is instead a recognition of the level of quality achieved by the department. As far as births are concerned, only the Tradate hospital is located in the lower Varese area. The surprise is only relative: for some time in certain fields the Legnano hospital has been a point of reference for a basin that goes far beyond the 188 thousand residents in its district of competence. Especially with regards to cardiac surgery and neurosurgery, but also for the treatment of strokes, patients also arrive in Legnano from other provinces, sometimes passing directly through the emergency room. If the emergency room is always crowded, it is also because just under a third of users come from abroad.
More than the dead
A similar trend was has already been highlighted by the Municipality as regards deaths: if 640 people from Legnano died during 2023 (for a natural balance of -247 residents), the deaths registered in the registry were 1,241. The reason? Just as in hospitals, children are also born to couples who have arrived from abroad, in retirement homes guests who have residence in other municipalities pass away.
