Celebrations for Guglielmo Marconi begin today, the radio genius who would have turned 150 two days ago. And Marconi also made history in Ancona, with a series of experiments at the old lighthouse. This is where a gazebo will be set up for those who want to know more. Organizing everything was Ari, the Italian amateur radio association. The objective is to recall the Marconi experiments of 1904. “Experiments which will be 120 years old in August”, explained the secretary of the Doric section, Marco Oliveri. The novelty of 2024, compared to traditional re-enactments, concerns the 150th. Initiatives both at Palazzo degli Anziani (from 9.30 to 13) and, indeed, at Cardeto, even at night. “Today, the exhibition begins at the Palazzo, with a station at the lighthouse that will also be active at night because certain bands, as Marconi said, work better at night than during the day”, says Olivieri. A tent near the lighthouse that will remain there tomorrow, in which the Palazzo degli Anziani will host a conference. Clearly, citizens are invited. The initiative was sponsored by the Doric municipal administration, which also granted the technical contribution. Marconi, one of the greatest Italian inventors, contributed to the development of a telecommunications system based on radio waves. “He came to Ancona 120 years ago and in the first week of August he carried out an experiment on the propagation of radio waves. He wanted to understand the difference between night and day, so he commissioned the Poldhu station, in Cornwall, to transmit agreed signals that he would have received it from Ancona – says Olivieri – In short, he wanted to understand what would happen when we moved from night to day. His predictions were that with the arrival of day the signal would be lost. This hypothesis was later confirmed. In Piazza Stracca, in addition to the councilor Angelo Eliantonio, also Ennio Gambi (Univpm) and the engineer Oronzo Mauro, to talk about the Marche’s contribution to the invention of the radio.
