“The leader of the League Matteo Salvini is in Rome and is working on the lists in view of the European elections: General Roberto Vannacci, whose candidacy has also aroused great interest in worlds outside the party, will be the head of the list in the constituency of his residence, namely the Central Italy”announced the League, which just yesterday made official the candidacy of the general, author of the disputed book “Il Mondo al Contrario”.
The leader of the League Matteo Salviniwith a message on social media, explained the decision like this: “A message to the left which is scandalized because General Vannacci has chosen the League to run in the next European elections and change this blessed Europe once and for all. But, guys: isn’t this democracy?”said the deputy prime minister and minister of transport in a video published on social networks.
“Allow citizens to choose who will defend Italy and Italians in the next European Parliament?”Salvini said again. “But then let me tell you – he added – if on the left they nominate a person who is detained in a prison abroad on very serious charges, and they are right to do so because then it will be the Italians who choose, we cannot put on our lists a general who defended the lives of his men and the honor of Italy in Iraq, Afghanistan and in many countries around the world? So, long live freedom, long live democracy and it will be up to the Italians to choose whether they prefer to give their vote to Ilaria Salis or Roberto Vannacci”.

But Vannacci’s candidacy was not warmly welcomed in the League. And in the last few hours the critical voices have multiplied. Giving voice to the ‘sentiment’ that circulates in the base is the Venetian regional councilor Roberto Marcato: “Vannacci has absolutely nothing to do with us. I am a founding father of the Liga Veneta and the North-East has a strong autonomist traction and he is not, in fact he comes from the army. He has a ‘suggestive’ concept, to be elegant, on homosexuals. He doesn’t even declare himself anti-fascist, and the League is.”
“I’m not a scholar of electoral flows, but from the point of view of values there is no added value here”, he said in an interview with Tgr. But he’s not the only one. The governor is among the big names Massimiliano Fedriga has already announced that he will not vote for him: “I am very happy with the three candidates from Friuli Venezia Giulia and only three preferences are possible.”
Not even the allies agree with the choice of candidacy. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto commented sarcastically: “A win-win choice, as they say. For him, for the League and for the army”because if he is elected, he will have to leave it or go on leave. “Crosetto also has a great following in the Armed Forces and in Leonardo – is the piqued response of the Northern League deputy secretary Andrea Crippa -. It’s his opinion, if he thinks this is the case I wouldn’t want to disappoint him”replied Vannacci, who “at the moment” he will not leave the army and, if he does not land in Strasbourg, he will decide later how to behave. “I’m not sure if I’ll be elected, now the real battle begins”, said the 56-year-old Tuscan, vowing to have only untied the knot “3-4 days ago”sending a whatsapp to Salvini: “He wrote to me that he was happy.”
