On Tuesday 30 April as part of the Literary Tuesdays in the Opera Theater of the Sanremo Casino at 4.30 pm in collaboration with Run for the Whales 2024, the biologist Maddalena Jahoda will talk about the book: “Whales save us! Cetaceans seen from another perspective” (Mursia) Biologist Sabina Airoldi (Tethys Institute – Pelagos Sanctuary) participates.

Whales and dolphins are much more similar to us than we think, also due to their “values”: bonds that last a lifetime, the culture handed down by grandmothers, the orca that doesn’t want to abandon her dead calf. Their stories resemble ours and are often intertwined with human ones, as told by Maddalena Jahoda, who has been committed to the protection of animals and the environment for decades. Her passionate but rigorous scientific dissemination alternates with storytelling featuring cetaceans, in an intriguing change of perspective that, every now and then, also makes the whales “speak” directly. And while she, with a hint of self-irony, comes up against daily misunderstandings about animals so little known in our country, the Author hears herself asked: «But why save whales?». Today it is fundamental, and for completely new reasons. According to the most recent research, large cetaceans have a much more important role than we thought, and could even help us remedy the damage we are causing to the environment. Maybe we have to save the whales so that they can save us.

Maddalena Jahoda Biologist and scientific communicator, she writes above all about animals and the marine environment and in particular about whales and dolphins. After many years dedicated to research and traditional means of communication such as articles and conferences, today you also use alternative methods of scientific dissemination: painting, artistic installations, edu-tainment, graphics, video editing…

The appointment with the Literary Tuesdays is Thursday 2 May at 4.30pm Carmine Abate presents the book “A happy country”. (Mondadori)
