Onondaga Lake Parkway reopens after box truck hits bridge

Update 9:41 am: All lanes of the Onondaga Lake Parkway have reopened after a box truck hit the bridge Friday morning.

The truck has been removed from under the bridge and is loaded onto a tow truck.

Original Story:

Syracuse, NY — The Onondaga Lake Parkway is closed after a truck collided with the road’s infamous bridge Friday morning.

Around 8:18 am, the box truck hit the bridge and became stuck underneath, according to Onondaga County 911 Center dispatches.

The collision has shut down both sides of the road, dispatchers said. The road is closed between Oswego and Park streets.

Police are on scene and the truck is wedged under the bridge. A tow truck arrived around 9 am to begin clearing the road.

Tractor-trailers have been banned from the parkway for decades because their average height is 13 feet 6 inches to 14 feet. The clearance under the railroad bridge is marked as 10 feet 9 inches.

Despite the ban and multiple warning signs, trucks repeatedly hit the bridge and caused traffic disruptions. In 2024, the bridge has only been hit one other time. The driver in that collision was ticketed 25 times.

An average of 22,000 cars cross under the bridge each day on Onondaga Lake Parkway, according to the DOT.
