In recent times, some readers have reported to us the removal of the municipal water houses, located in various points of the city of Varese: a worrying report, because many citizens still used them regularly.
The stations were installed in 2014, after a tender procedure, in six different neighbourhoods: in via Vannucci, in the area adjacent to the milk distributor, in via Hermada at the Brunella in the “Oriana Fallaci” garden, in via Sette Termini a San Fermoin Piazza Bossi a Bobbiatein via Carnia, in front of the “Anne Frank” school and others Fish Calcinatenear the underpass between Via Ettore Ponti and the SP1.
The good news, however, is that their removal is not definitive: the old systems, several of which are damaged and vandalised, will be replaced by new, more modern and efficient houses.
«It is a necessary moment of transition also to arrange the bases and verify the correct functionality of the underground services, as well as restore a situation of decorum that has been missing for some time – he explained Nicoletta San Martinocouncilor for environmental protection, social sustainability and circular economy of the Municipality of Varese – We have already identified, through a public tender procedure, a new interested operator. For the Administration this is an important service which encourages, through the use of mains water, the reduction in the production of plastic bottles and consequently the environmental impacts linked to the quantity of plastic to be disposed of, with a view to reducing of solid urban waste. It is also a service much appreciated by citizens and it was right to restore its full functionality.”
However, particular attention will be paid to: «Avoid vandalism and waste abandonment around the houses, events that have occurred several times in the past: we will ask the new operator to pay great attention to this aspect”.
WHAT THE NEW OPERATOR WILL DO
The new operator will have to install more modern houses that will supply mains water, chilled still water and chilled sparkling water, upon payment of a fee which will be made through an electronic prepaid card. The public price has been set at a maximum of €0.08 per liter, subject to any reductions.
The concessionaire will have to take care of the ordinary and extraordinary maintenance of the systems to ensure operation, perfect efficiency and constant supply of water. In exchange for the management and economic exploitation of the houses, the concessionaire will pay the Municipality of Varese an annual fee for the occupation of public land.
