“The right of the regional government should declare itself anti-fascist”. This was asked by the regional secretary of the Young Democrats of Abruzzo Saverio Gileno on the occasion of the celebrations on 25 April.
“On the occasion of Liberation Day – adds Gileno – we join together to celebrate the values of anti-fascism and the Resistance that freed Italy from Nazi-fascist oppression. It is a fundamental moment to remember and forcefully reaffirm the importance of these ideas of freedom to counter any attempt at ‘fascist’ drift.
As underlined by the writer Antonio Scurati, at a time when government censorship represses freedom of expression and criticism of the government itself, it is essential to oppose with determination any form of authoritarian temptation. The Resistance – continues the Gd secretary – represents the triumph of the values of freedom, democracy and solidarity, and the memory of him is and must be more relevant than ever.
Even in Abruzzo – Gileno reiterates – the memory of April 25th must be alive and present every day. The Maiella Brigade, symbol of our fight for freedom, deserves to be celebrated without reservations or hesitations. It is a moment to challenge the right that governs the Region to declare itself forcefully anti-fascist and to join the chorus of those who recognize the importance of the Resistance in building a free and inclusive society.
The liberation from Nazi-fascist oppression – continues Gileno – was a victory of popular will and anti-fascist resistance. Today, more than ever, we must honor the sacrifice of those who fought for our freedom and commit ourselves to preserving and defending the values for which they gave their lives, today we Young Democrats of Abruzzo are doing it throughout the region and we believe – he concludes – that there is a need for greater commitment in training places to maintain the values of the resistance”.
