Yesterday the memorial stone of partisan Of Taranto Pietro Pandiani – hero who fought against the Nazi-fascists in the mountains of the Upper Reno Valley, in Emilia Romagna, silver medal for military valor, founder of the Justice and Freedom Mountain brigade – was defaced with a Celtic cross imprinted with black paint. The neo-fascist symbol dirtied the very word partisan, so that it was illegible. Precisely on Liberation Day.
The mayor’s message
The Municipality immediately cleaned up the gash. “An ignoble act”, said Rinaldo Melucci, mayor of Taranto. “We intervened to clean up the monument. We repudiate any contempt for our Constitution and our history, today and always. Long live April 25th. Long live Liberation Day”.
