Food controls in Palermo, seizure of fish and animal feed: very high fines

PALERMO – During the month of April, as part of the inspection operations aimed at protecting the health of citizens, i Carabinieri of the NAS of Palermowith the support of the local Territorial Army and the technical staff of the ASP, have conducted several controls in the Sicilian capital.

The raid on the local market in Palermo

During the checks carried out in some fishmongers in the local market of Palermoalso aimed at ensuring compliance with health and hygiene standards and European Union regulations on fishing, the military proceeded to administrative seizure of 107 kilograms of fish with an approximate value of 4,000 euros. This because the traceability of the product had not been adequately guaranteedcompromising the safety of the food chain.

Furthermore, it turned out that a supermarket in the south-west of the city had used a space for food storage without authorisation. Likewise, in a bakery of the center, were found structural changes to the business without the necessary updating of the health registration.

Overall, following these control activities, they were administrative sanctions for a total of 3,500 euros were imposed.

Checks on a farm

In the province of Palermo, one was inflicted total fine of 60,000 euros to a farm where the police have blocked 38 heads of livestock because the farm did not have a company code and the animals did not have an identification mark.

Furthermore, the administrative seizure of 1,605 kilograms of animal feedfor which traceability had not been correctly guaranteed, putting the safety of the food supply chain at risk.
