An abandoned area, or almost. The market area of Cerignola at the entrance to the Fornaci district is in complete disrepair: rats have in fact been spotted, as well as bags of rubbish still placed on the side of the road which no one collects.
The person responsible for reporting this situation is Vincenzo Specchio, local manager of Confcommercio for years and during the first part of the council that Franco Metta had as mayor between 2015 and 2017, delegate for trade: «with regard to the alarming situation inconvenience suffered by operators in public areas of the Fornaci area due to the negligence and culpable inefficiency of the municipal waste collection service which have caused dirt and proliferation of mice which exasperate operators and consumers of the Wednesday market, we make the sacrosanct protest of the street vendors our own even if we are sure that this further administrative inefficiency has not been found.”
So Specchio, who today holds the role of citizen manager of the League, underlines how the first complaints of this situation came from the traders who every Wednesday morning occupy and color the large avenues of the district south-west of the city, where over 400 stalls are set up. street vendors of almost all types of goods, in particular clothing, household items and food.
Among these is Michele Gammino, trade union representative, who states: «I don’t think we can work in this way. The municipal administration is absent, while the councilor for productive activities, Sergio Cialdella, has not arrived and we continue to see rats walking around. As a representative of street vendors, I ask for immediate intervention to resolve the problem.”
Together with this hygiene problem, aggravated by the absence of waste bins, comes the inconvenience of traffic congestion, particularly for those who need to reach the various school buildings in the area. Thus, some are already thinking about a new location for the market, after 25 years of problems.
