This is the donation of a ballot paper from the Nicastro municipal elections of 31 March 1946, “the first free elections of the post-war period, as well as the first in which women were able to vote and run for office. Five lists were in the field: Christian Democracy and Republican Party, Socialists and Communists, two civic lists (defined as “Torre” and “Gregna” in the press of the time) and finally the Everyman’s Front, which later withdrew its list to support the DC.

The elections were won by the DC-PRI coalition which with approximately 140 thousand votes won 24 seats out of 30, followed by PCI-PSI with 104 thousand votes. It should be remembered that each voter could express up to a maximum of 24 preferences: a number that today may appear “exaggerated” but which gives us the measure of the desire for democracy after twenty years of fascist regime.

Giuseppe Cuiuli of the DC was elected mayor, taking the place of the socialist Eugenio Greco, who had been entrusted with administrative responsibilities in the delicate moment of transition following 8 September 1943″.
