Syracuse needs to add guard Dakota Leffew

I wrote nearly a week ago about how Syracuse needed to add a prolific scorer, and they did just that. With SU getting Hofstra guard Jaquan Carlos out of the portal, the backcourt is nearly set. But, it seems like there is still one more piece on the way for the Orange that could round out the squad.

Dakota Leffew

It was announced yesterday that Leffew is crystalballed to join Syracuse. The Mount St. Mary’s product averaged 17.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.9 assists last year. Although not guaranteed, it makes sense for the four-star to join SU. The senior would be accompanying his head from Mount St. Mary’s Dan Engelstad in the process. Leffew was a standout for the Mountaineers this past season, leading the team in points, minutes, and assists. His impressive three-point shooting by him, at 36%, could also help alleviate Syracuse’s struggles in that department. Leffew brings a valuable offensive presence, capable of both spreading the floor and scoring. The guard would be the perfect option to replace a guy like Judah Mintz for SU. While the senior is still favored to go to Syracuse, his top six choices include Georgia, Pitt, South Carolina, Villanova, and Xavier. It would be disappointing for Engeelstead if Leffew doesn’t choose SU, but it seems like that will be no worry for the new assistant coach.

Outlook for the squad

The new additions of Leffew and Carlos should establish a new elite backcourt for SU. Leffew and Carlos could ideally operate as the Mintz and Quadir Copeland for the 2024-25 season. Both led their respective squads at the guard position this season and combined for a 35% clip from three-point range. Along with Leffew and Carlos, Syracuse’s offense will be completely transformed by center Eddie Lampkin Jr. and forward Jyare Davis. If the Orange officially sign Leffew, the starting five for next season should be set. Regardless of whether the senior comes to the ‘Cuse, Adrian Autry has plenty of weapons on the roster to lead Syracuse back to the promised land.
