Economy – Viterbo – Giulio Terri, president of the street vendors in the capital of Tuscia: “Up until now there has been no communication from the municipality, we are also waiting for the definitive green light for the European market in June”

Viterbo – “We want to return to Piazza della Rocca, the Saturday market must be in the center of the city”. To declare it is Giulio Terripresident of the street vendors in the municipality of Viterbo.

“The Saturday market should be in the heart of the city – explains Giulio Terri -. The center lives thanks to the market. The stalls bring in people coming and going, which also helps the activities. All the markets we take part in are in the city centre. In this way they are an asset for the territory. By staying outside the centre, we risk only encountering more difficulties for us street vendors.”
“We clearly would have preferred to return to the Shrine, as we once were – adds Giulio Terri -. But it’s also fine to return to Piazza della Rocca, the important thing is to be in the center area. Last year we had a test run in April, then the work began. Now, however, the construction site in Via Matteotti is finished and in Piazza della Rocca the work on the small square in San Francesco remains to be completed. For the rest, however, there is no longer a need to continue the construction sites. And then the time has come to return to Piazza della Rocca, with the market in the centre.”
But at the moment there would be no communication from the administration. “Until now, however, we have not had any communication from the municipality – clarifies the president of the street vendors in the municipality of Viterbo -. In fact, we were thinking of sending, as the Confesercenti union, a letter. To start contacts and understand how and when to return with the market to Piazza della Rocca”.

Even if today there would be fewer deadlocks. “There would be a downsizing of the stalls now, from around 110 that we were at the Shrine, today we are at around 55. But in any case the important thing is to return to the center – adds Giulio Terri -. Markets must be at the center. This is the case in most Italian cities. Then outside there may be a local market, but it is of a different nature. The center lives thanks to the market, bringing work to bars, restaurants and other shops. A coming and going is created which helps everyone.”
And while the street vendors are waiting for some decision from the administration, there should also soon be an appointment in June, when the European market should arrive in the capital of Tuscia. An event, in its second edition, which should cover the dates from 13 to 15 June.
“The European market should also be there – explains Terri -. But nothing exactly has been established yet, we are waiting for the final green light from the municipality.”
The event is organized by the national Anva Confesercenti and Pqm, Scotland on tour. The market would be in Via Marconi and surrounding areas, from Piazza degli Almadiani to Piazza del Teatro. There could soon be the first meeting between the municipal administration and the street vendors. However, we will most likely have to wait for the definitive approval from the municipality first. Over 50 street food and craft stands would participate.
