SULMONA. Still high tension in the Sulmona maximum security prison. An inmate of around 40 years of age, yesterday morning, went into a rage, “kidnapping” the other inmates and the prison officers on duty for several minutes. The man, a life prisoner who had already been the protagonist of violent acts in the past, left his cell and his section to move towards the prison laundry block. Here, in a clear state of agitation, he occupied the area, protesting to the police about a package that was allegedly denied to him. “I won’t move until you give me what I owe” repeated the inmate, blocking all activities. Only with exhausting dialogue did the prison officers, despite the serious and long-standing staff shortages, manage to manage the delicate situation professionally, restoring calm. The inmate was then taken back to his cell. The case was immediately reported to the management of the penitentiary facility. In recent months, the 40-year-old had gone into a rage in the same way, so much so that he had been asked to be transferred to another penitentiary or in any case to resort to special surveillance. The prisoner is one of those who, in the past, had been caught trying to bring mobile phones into prison. A phenomenon that has spread like wildfire in recent times. From 2022 to 2024, almost thirty devices were seized, the last four last week, found inside rubbish bins during a search. Meanwhile, good news is arriving on the prison construction front. The Ministries of Infrastructure and Justice have allocated 500 thousand euros to renovate the prison officers’ barracks. «Every day we take a small step in reversing the trend to recover detention places, guarantee dignified barracks for our penitentiary police officers, make our institutions more efficient and above all make them safe», he declares Andrea Delmastro Delle Vedove, Undersecretary of State for Justice. Satisfaction was also expressed by the senator, Guido Quintino Liris.
