Suolo, Tiso(Confeuro): “Italy loses agricultural land. Focusing on exodus from the CAP”

“Our country has lost a third of its agricultural surface area over the years. Confeuro considers the numbers recently reeled off by ISPRA – the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research – in the latest national report “Land consumption, territorial dynamics and ecosystem services”, which outlines an updated context of the processes, to be absolutely alarming and serious. of transformation of the territory following major critical issues such as, for example, urbanisation, erosion, abandonment and pollution. An even more worrying picture if we consider that this phenomenon is constantly growing with high percentages of soil once again at risk by 2050, which could have strong negative consequences on the well-being of the environment, humans and animals. It is clear and evident, in Confeuro’s opinion, that immediate and concrete solutions are needed – technological and innovative – capable, on the one hand, of making production more effective, and on the other of conserving and recovering agricultural surfaces, especially those belonging to the so-called “CAP exoduses”, i.e. those small and medium-sized farmers who have been excluded from the contributions of the common agricultural policies and who therefore, no longer having economic support, have decided to abandon their small plot of land. In this direction, it is necessary to group together this multitude of small landowners and encourage the putting abandoned surfaces back into production. And this virtuous practice would inevitably lead to significant employment, ecological, environmental and production advantages, as well as saving important portions of land from neglect and overbuilding. This, for us, should be the path to follow, an institutional priority that cannot be postponed both for the national government and for the European institutions”.

Thus, in a press note, Andrea Tiso, national president of Confeuro, the Confederation of European and World Farmers.
