The objective is achieved, salvation is a done deal. The home draw against Powerarrived following the crackling 2-2, gave the Messina the point that was needed to have the comfort of mathematics, at the end of an overall positive season. But before sending the players on holiday and, hopefully, planning the next championship well in advance, the Giallorossi will have to honor the last match of the championship, facing the Monopolies to the Venetians, a notoriously difficult pitch for the shield-white shirt. In the ten official championship matches, played immediately after the Second World War, the Peloritani have never managed to grab the entire stake, only managing three draws, against the seven victories achieved by the seagulls.
The first meeting dates back to the “famous” 1946-47 Serie C season, the mammoth post-war championship in which 266 teams took part. In the final “South” group, after a splendid run in the regular championship, the two Peloritan teams, theAC Messina and the Carousel, sought access to Serie B, clashing with the Audace Monopoli. The city’s first team, however, having reached the end of its existence, achieved a solid 3-0, giving up their ambitions for promotion.
To review another clash between Monopolies And Messina we need to make a chronological leap of thirty-three years, arriving at the 1979-80 Serie C2 season. On that occasion, the Giallorossi ofAcrsuffered their second defeat in a row, losing 1-0 following a goal by By Giulio.
