Ceasefire everywhere

An April 25th of liberation from wars, to ask for a ceasefire everywhere and which must see everyone united to defend and implement the Charter born from the anti-fascist resistance. Anpi, CGIL, Arci and the Network for the Defense of the Constitution address with a shared appeal to the entire democratic and anti-fascist citizenry so that there is maximum support and because this April 25th “must see us more united than ever” to repel the attacks to our parliamentary democracy and the dangerous attempts to transform it into a “democracy” (similar to Orban’s Hungary).

In memory of Vincenzo Agostino

In the poster of the event, the photo portraying Vincenzo Agostino among the others, during an April 25th in the Massimo salt pan, was chosen to remember him a few days after his death.

“There is the awareness that this battle needs to be supported by broad participation from below, which is essential to defend and fully realize that model of democracy and society configured by our Constitutional Charter, which places the repudiation of war at the basis of the Republic , dignified and safe work, freedom and equality of all people, solidarity, fundamental civil, political and social rights, social and environmental justice, also in the interests of future generations”, is written in the appeal launched by the Anpi and the other acronyms for the day of mobilization.

Appeal against wars

Last year, Russian aggression against Ukraine worsened with thousands of victims, destroying the arms race that involved Europe and our country. A rearmament that had already resulted in a considerable cut in resources for the welfare state, for healthcare and for education, and an energy crisis, with inflation that decimated salaries and pensions. This year the scenario that presents itself is even bleaker.

“With the Israeli-Palestinian conflict – continues the appeal – the situation has worsened considerably and has reached unimaginable levels in the Gaza Strip, where well before the barbaric attack by Hamas on 7 October, there was already a substantial Israeli occupation, as well as in the West Bank where Hamas is not in power. The unprecedented reaction of the Israeli army, with more than 34,000 civilians, including at least 12,000 children dead under the bombs or buried in the rubble, was the subject of a specific complaint to the International Court of Justice and the UN Security Council approved a resolution for an immediate ceasefire.”

Also in the appeal there is a passage on the Meloni government, “made up of three forces culturally and historically extraneous to the constitutional arc that gave life to the Constituent Assembly”.

“A government that – continues the note from Anpi, CGIL, Arci, Rete per la Constitution – carries out an organic plan of authoritarian restoration that aims to overturn the Constitution. The mother of all the reforms that the government intends to carry out is the direct election of the head of government, which would entail the subordination of the residual power of Parliament and the judiciary to the executive.”

A design flanked by three complementary projects. The appeal lists: “The introduction into the Constitution of a majoritarian electoral system, even more unfair than the current one, which would further reduce the representativeness of Parliament; the constitutional reform of justice, which would dismantle the guarantees of independence and autonomy of the judiciary; differentiated regionalism which would accentuate the already serious territorial inequalities between the North and South of the country and would cancel the universalistic and solidarity model of welfare envisaged by the Constitution”.
