Smallest pacemaker in the world implanted in Matera

An example of the smallest pacemaker in the world was implanted on a patient during an operation performed by the Interventional Cardiology team of theMadonna delle Grazie hospital in Matera directed by Dr Nicola Bozza.

This was announced by the Matera Health Authority, explaining that “the device is the size of a vitamin tablet” and that it was implanted “directly into the heart cavity through the femoral vein”. The woman who underwent surgery “had already undergone several traditional operations which in some cases had given rise to infections”.

A few days after the inauguration of the new Hemodynamics and electrophysiology room, the complex Cardiology and Coronary Intensive Care Unit of the Matera hospital, directed by Doctor Giandomenico Tarsiatherefore stands out for being among the first structures in Italy to have implemented this revolutionary system, which offers a series of crucial advantages compared to traditional devices.

“The new device – states Tarsia – allows us to overcome the risk of complications related to the implantation of traditional devices, such as infections, hematomas, bedsores and dislocations. We are among the first hospitals in Italy to have adopted the technology Medtronic Micra AV2the new generation of the smallest pacemakers in the world”.

Tarsia continues: “With this pacemaker, the potential complications of traditional devices linked to the electrocatheters and the surgical ‘pocket’ under the skin are eliminated. Plus, thanks to the longevity of the battery, it means most patients will only need one pacemaker for life.”

Instead, Dr. Bozza says: “The introduction of this system completely eliminates this eventuality, furthermore this new generation of devices offers the possibility of remote monitoring. This allows the hospital to remotely control the implanted device without the need for the patient to personally go to the clinic for a visit, with the related advantages of reduced hospitalizations and greater peace of mind in terms of safety.”

Final comment entrusted to the extraordinary commissioner of the Matera health authority, Maurizio Friolo: “This intervention, among the first in Italy, confirms the high quality standard that the Madonna delle Grazie hospital is able to offer. Teamwork and the great skills of our professionals, combined with technological innovation lead to high-level results. The use of the new devices is a further step forward which concretely opens the doors to telemedicine to guarantee excellent care and improve the quality of life of patients”.
