REVOLUTION IN VENICE: TICKET FROM TOMORROW

REVOLUTION IN VENICE: TICKET FROM TOMORROW

The revolution starts tomorrow: Thursday 25 April will be the first day with the contribution for access to Venice, the measure desired by the Municipality to counter the impact of tourism in the historic center of the city.

Tomorrow will be the first of 29 days in which those who arrive in the historic city between 8.30am and 4pm and are not residents of Venice will have to book and also pay 5 euros if they live outside Veneto. A measure that applies only to those arriving on the same day since those who stay overnight in accommodation facilities already pay the tourist tax.

Between Piazzale Roma and the station, the two main access points to the centre, everything is already ready: around fifty people will be responsible for managing public order, including spot checks. Anyone stopped will be asked for their identity document and the QR Code relating to the booking. The fines for those who do not comply will be between 50 and 300 euros.

But at the same time, the part of the city opposed to the ticket will also make its voice heard: oppositions in the city council, committees and associations will meet at 10.30 in a large collective demonstration to underline how the access fee would not be the correct measure to manage the flows tourist.

A measure that would only be a mere tool to raise cash and at the same time would limit residents more than tourists. In fact, it would force the former to report the visit of friends and relatives, while the latter, paying “just” 5 euros, would wander around the city even on the busiest days.

In short, a measure that is causing discussion even before it comes into force.
