Since this morning, 1,800 meters of motorway have become usable again. The section of the roadwayA19 Palermo-Cataniabetween the Buonfornello and Scillato junctions, reopens to traffic.

The works at the height of the building have been completed Capraia gallery, in the direction of the Etna capital. A maintenance intervention interrupted its circulation in 2012.

The inauguration between km 53,000 and km 54,800 in the presence of Renato Schifani, in the dual role of president of the Sicilian Region and extraordinary government commissioner for the management of the A19, and the regional councilor for Infrastructure Alessandro Aricò.

The completion of this stretch is an integral part of a more massive intervention which aims, explains Schifani: «to completely or almost completely make clear this highway by December 2026.

The A19 had never been the subject of ordinary and extraordinary maintenance interventions, now Anas’ work amounts to over 800 million with the involvement of various shipyards”.

What favors speed, adds the regional governor, is the fact that “a team spirit has been created and this has led to a sort of competition between companies for who finishes first”.

According to data reported by Anas, in the first months of 2024 ten construction sites have already been completed along the Palermo-Catania line, with a cost of 27 million euros for the works; by the end of the year another thirteen should be completed, with an outlay of 85 million.

At the end of 2023, three other interventions worth a total of 105 million had already been started, while another three started at the beginning of 2024 at a cost of 22 million. Other works should be started by the end of the year, with funding of around 100 million.

As regards traffic flows, the suspension of some motorway construction sites is expected between mid-July and September, in order to make traffic usable with fewer diversions.

On the 196 km that separate Palermo and Catania, Anas’s goal is do not go beyond 30 km of closed routes.
