CATANIA – An app that “encourages players to bring peace to various situations through small gestures of kindness and compassion”. This is the objective of the winning project of the “In game for peace” competition created by the Rotary Catania Est in collaboration with the CSVE – Centro Servizi per il Volontariato Etneo and the Nautilus Academy which saw the participation of three class groups from the Comprehensive Institute Dusmet-Doria coordinated by the Headmaster Manuela Carmen Di Pietro.

“Bringing the topic of non-violence to school might not have been easy – explains Dimitri Tosi President of the Rotary Club Catania Est – and for this very reason we thought of using a language that kids know very well, which is that of video games. The challenge we set ourselves was to offer the kids a workshop that led them to create a non-violent video game to donate to the community.”

The projects

Four projects were presented by the classes coming from the central plexus and the Case Sante and Playa branches.

“One more beautiful than the other”, commented Filippo Silvestro, director of the Nautilus Academy. “The objective of this laboratory was to focus on the creative part – he continues – and therefore on how the connection between the creator of the game and the user, the player, arises and works. Together with the kids we thought about the systems that make it possible: then they created the storytelling.”

The winning project – presented by 3G – is called “Pacifica” and takes place in a series of serene settings, such as natural landscapes, quiet villages or harmonious cities. The target? Calm down a group of angry people, help injured animals, or resolve a dispute between neighbors.

“The main objective – write the 3G guys in their report – is to promote peace and harmony through small acts of kindness and compassion. Players are encouraged to reflect on how these actions can positively impact the world around them.”

The next steps

“We thank Rotary Catania Est for having given our children the opportunity to carry out work of peace and social cooperation”, declares Professor Angela Saraniti, coordinator of the project and member of the Competitions and Competitions Commission.

“This competition – echoes vice-principal Marina Camarda – gave our students the opportunity to combine civic education with technology and IT: apps are today the fastest tool for communicating with the new generations. I thank Rotary and the representatives of the Nautilus Academy for this opportunity for growth”.

Now the project moves to its second step: “Pacifica” will become an app that will be given to the community and will be available in the app store. It will be created by the students of the Nautilus Academy: the programmer of the best app will win a scholarship financed by Rotary Catania Est.
