Born in Avignana, in the Turin area, on 7 October 1949 he has been in politics for 60 years. Was seven times MP from the XII to the XVI legislature until his resignation on 19 July 2011 and again from the XVIII legislature from 19 March 2018 to the XIX legislature, the current one, from 13 October 2022. He has been part of the parliamentary group of the Democratic Party – Democratic and Progressive Italy since 18 October 2022, has been vice-president of the Fourth Permanent Defense Commission since November 9, 2022 and is a substitute member of the Italian delegation in the parliamentary assembly of the Council of Europe from 12 January 2023.

He was secretary of the Communist Federation of Turin (1983-87), member of the secretariat of the Italian Communist Party (1987-91), leader of the Democratic Party of the Left (1991-98) and of the Democrats of the Left, who elected him in 2001 secretary, a position he held until the party merged with the Democratic Party in 2007. He was undersecretary for Foreign Affairs in the first Prodi government (1996-98), minister of foreign trade in the two D’Alema governments from 1998 to 2000 and of Justice in the second Amato government from 2000 to 2001. From 2001 to 2007, as national secretary of the party, he dedicated himself to the organization of the Democrats of the Left and was among the founders of the Democratic Party.

In the 2008 political elections he was elected deputy on the PD list and in the 2011 local elections, candidate after winning the primaries, he was elected mayor of the city of Turin. From July 2013 to October 2016 he was president of Anci, the National Association of Italian Municipalities. In 2016 he ran again in the local elections for a new mandate as mayor of Turin, but was defeated by his five-star opponent Appendino. Last year he declared: “Not being confirmed as mayor was a great pain.” In 2023 he was reconfirmed President of the Commission for monitoring democratic standards, on the rule of law and on respect for civil, social and political rights in the 47 member countries of the Council of Europe and Vice President of the Political Commission, President of the Italy-Italy friendship section France of the Interparliamentary Union.

From 2020 to 2022 he was President of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Chamber of Deputies – of which he was Vice President from 2018 to 2020. He was Undersecretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1996-98 Prodi Government) with responsibility also for European Community Policies at the Presidency of the Council; Minister of Foreign Trade (1998-2000 D’Alema Government); Minister of Justice (2000-01 Amato Government).

Fassino is the author of some books including Pd really (2017), Tav. Why yes (with S. Chiamparino, 2018) and Dalla revolution to democracy (2021).

Private life

He is married in second marriage since 1993 with a long-term policy, Anna Serafini, former PD parliamentarian. «Deputy and then senator. In politics long before you met me. In her free time she dedicates herself to “reading, cinema and theatre, I love jazz, musicals and I am passionate about travelling”. As a boy you played for Juventus.

And as regards politics, he defines it as “part of the DNA” and “an integral part of the family history”. «My grandfather was a founder of the Socialist Party at the beginning of the twentieth century; my father was one of the leaders of the Resistance in Turin »he explained. «My political baptism was joining Nuova Resistenza in 1963.
