Velázquez at the Gallerie d’Italia in Naples

NAPLES From 24 April to 14 July 2024, two masterpieces by Diego VelázquezL’Immaculate Conception And Saint John the Evangelist on Patmos, coming from National Gallery, Londonare on display at Gallerie d’Italia in Naples.

This is an event that celebrates the collaborative bond between the Gallerie d’Italia and the National Gallery which, in the same period, will host the Martyrdom of Saint Ursula Of Caravaggiocoming from the Neapolitan collection of Intesa Sanpaolo.

The exhibition, entitled Velázquez. A great signrepresents a new chapter of the review “The Illustrious Guest”which brings important works from prestigious Italian and international institutions to the Intesa Sanpaolo museums.

The two paintings by Velázquez will be flanked by two other works depicting theImmaculate Conception: one of Paolo Finoglio coming from the Franciscan convent of San Lorenzo Maggiore in Naples and the other of Battistello Caracciolo preserved in the church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Roccadaspide, Cilento.

Velázquez in Naples: a deep bond

Velázquez’s stays in Naples, in 1629-1630 and 1649-1651, played a fundamental role in his artistic training. The influence of Caravaggio’s naturalismthe encounter with local painting and the lively Neapolitan cultural atmosphere left an indelible mark on his work.
