Excerpts taken from the texts of the catalogue, on display from 4 May:

“In the Seventies he continued his figurative phase – synthetic and minimalist, made of overlapping veils and a disruptive narrative charge – until reaching that contamination which coincides with the informal turning point. The lyrical transfiguration of reality is progressive and reaches its extreme with the acquisition of chalcographic techniques which prove to be particularly congenial to the artist’s expressiveness. They become a practice of exploration of that border territory where sign and color converge, giving life to minute graphemes and textures aimed at modifying space and visual perception. If the form left the artist all the possibilities of creative nature, the informal had however a new possibility of transcending within it, thus opening an infinity of new doors on the formal indefinites. Thus wrote Antoni Tapies in 1952, referring to the informal style that has its roots in Nordic Expressionism of which traces remain in the bright and contrasting colors and in the use of an incisive line from which Mirella Mibelli’s stylistic code seems to arise. Overlays between warm and cold colors are suddenly torn apart by sudden gestures that compare it to the gestures of Emilio Vedova and the rapid and decisive line of Hans Hartung, underlining the intensely expressive character of the sign. That at times regular sign made on one side of thread-like lines that intersect to form highly vibrant reticulates and textures, on the other by a dilated and lyrically nuanced stain painting, distinctive features that characterize the works selected for this exhibition at The Social Gallery . Dating from the 1980s, the 12 small and medium-sized works show some of the techniques most used by the artist throughout his career, from watercolor on paper to wax, from aquatint to poupee inking. The latter obtained from the experimentation begun in 1982 at the Urbino Academy with Franco Ferrovecchio and continued in Rosanna D’Alessandro’s L’Aquilone printing house in Cagliari.”

“In a vortex of shapes and colors, the art of Mirella Mibelli stands out like a bright beacon, guiding viewers through a fascinating journey into the abstract universe. Today, with this tribute we are celebrating the creative genius of this extraordinary painter, whose abstract season enriched the face of Sardinian contemporary art. Mirella Mibelli was a visionary, a pioneer of abstract expression who challenged the boundaries of artistic convention and opened new horizons of possibility. With her creativity, the daughter of a free mind, she has transformed the canvas into a playground for inventiveness, exploring the depths of human emotion through bold shapes and colors. Her works are manifestos of freedom and spontaneity, where chaos and order merge in a timeless dance. Through vibrant shades and lines, Mirella has captured the very essence of life, revealing the beauty hidden in the imperfection and uncertainty of the world. But Mirella’s abstract is more than just a visual representation; it’s a bold statement of individuality and authenticity. Each brushstroke is a testament to her unique vision and inner voice, which speaks directly to the heart of anyone fortunate enough to contemplate her works. The Quartese municipal administration, already promoting an urban redevelopment process dating back to the late 1990s, still believes in it, indeed, it reevaluates the inspiring visions of that project and relaunches art, artists and future prospects. Thank you, Mirella Mibelli, for enriching the world with your extraordinary season of the abstract. Your art will forever remain a beacon of inspiration and a source of wonder to all those fortunate enough to encounter it.”
