Syracuse football adds big OT Savion Washington from Colorado

Syracuse, NY — Fran Brown said it multiple times this spring: Big people beat little people up, and he wants big people on his football team.

That shows in Syracuse football’s latest pickup from the transfer portal.

Savion Washington, a 6-foot-8, 320-pound offensive tackle from Colorado, committed to the Orange on Tuesday night, announcing his decision on his Instagram.

Washington posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he had received offers from Syracuse, Baylor, Rutgers and Texas A&M since entering the transfer portal April 15.

He was a three-star transfer by the 247Sports Composite.

Washington played in 10 games for Colorado last season after transferring from Kent State, where he’d played three years. He had the third-best overall offensive grade (65.4%) among the Buffs offensive linemen per Pro Football Focus, third in run blocking (64.5%) and fifth in pass blocking (69.1%).

Colorado’s offensive line struggled last season to the point of coach Deion Sanders saying he was going to replace them. The team was second-to-last in sacks allowed; PFF has Washington as being responsible for four sacks.

Syracuse’s offensive line was an open competition all spring under new position coach Dale Williams despite returning most of last year’s depth chart.

There did seem to be a somewhat solidified first-team by the spring game, but if any position is still in competition, it’s the tackle spots. Enrique Cruz, Josh Miller and Da’Metrius Weatherspoon competed for the two spots this spring. Washington, Grambling State transfer Codie Hornsby and returner David Wohlabaugh, who missed spring with an injury, should add into that competition this fall.

Washington is the second transfer Syracuse has added in the second window, which closes April 30. Notre Dame cornerback Clarence Lewis was the first.
