In recent months, many considerations have already emerged regarding the no longer deferrable problem of safety in the workplace. The events in Florence, the catastrophe of the Bargi hydroelectric power plant and the other tragedies that have punctuated this beginning of 2024, shake a system that is still not very stable which seems to react only in the wake of the tragedies, and then return to “normality” while waiting for the next accident .

Following the declarations that emerged during the Rai Tre program “Report”, broadcast on Sunday 21 April, the Social and Labor Pastoral Office (PSL) of the Diocese of Massa Carrara-Pontremoli expresses some considerations in this regard.

«The words we heard last night are disturbing – he declared Alessandro Conti, director of the diocesan office of PSL – “escaped” an entrepreneur from Carrara in the stone sector, arousing surprise at how it is possible to tackle such a delicate topic, which touches the lives of many families who have seen a loved one lose their life at work , with an “arrogance” and superficiality like the one that emerged. Secondly, we ask ourselves how it is possible for a sector like the marble sector, which has a turnover of millions of euros, to still not have managed to reach the objective of zero deaths in the workplace.” «Moreover – continues Conti – one wonders how the city of Carrara must exclusively collect the blood of its children as a product of excavation, together with the pollution and systematic destruction of the Apuan Alps, while paying the price for so much wealth not redistributed , are the workers who are even called “moronics””.

«The issue of safety in the workplace – added Don Leonardo Biancalanivicar forane of Carrara – concerns first and foremost the dignity of people, primarily of workers, taking into account the adequate use of protective tools and their correct method of use to avoid serious accidents, which cannot be resolved with simplistic and reductive declarations”.

«The opportunity offered by this episode – said the bishop Msgr. Mario Vaccari – must give us the opportunity to recalibrate the relationships between the forces in the field, between those who offer work and those who need work, between the public administration and those who dig our Apuan Alps, between the people of Carrara and its mountains in order to go back to talking about what marble has been for the whole world for many centuries: a source of pride and an opportunity for the entire Apuan territory”.
