These days there is a new alliance onCuneo-Savona axis on shared themes: from infrastructure to the tourismfrom the emergency linked to swine fever to the wind farm of Monte Cerchio on the hills of the Bormida valley. The presidents of the two Provinces met in Cuneo to discuss and identify a common strategy, which also guarantees an acceleration of some important interventions for the economy of the two areas. Meanwhile, yesterday, Monday 22 April, in the Province of Cuneo, the control room on African swine fever met, where the extraordinary commissioner Vincenzo Caputo announced the start of work with the Cuneo pig district and the introduction of 14 new “bioregulators”, hunting guards.

One of the first operational resolutions of the Cuneo-Savona axis concerns, in fact, the emergency linked to the spread ofepidemic affecting wild boars and risks transmitting to pig farms between Piedmont and Liguria. The Province of Savona, where the phenomenon is limited, there are seven municipalities subjected to restrictions, will in fact become part of the control room established by the province of Cuneo which has proven to be an effective tool to combat the emergency so much so that it is indicated as model from other Italian regions. A collaboration that has so far avoided cases in a province that is among the top for pig farming in Italy.

The leaders of the two provincial administrations also discussed the wind farm which should be built on Mount Cerchio in the municipalities of Cengio, Cairo Montenotte and Saliceto, reiterating opposition to the plant even if the Province as a body has no direct competence: the environmental impact procedure is the responsibility of the Ministry. The local councilor Anna Maria Molinari – present at the summit – reiterated the opposition of the mayors and associations of the Bormida Valley.

On the front of infrastructure the presidents focused on rail and highway connections. There are two priorities for the Turin-Savona motorway. The first concerns the many construction sites that dot the route between the two provinces. The objective is to ask the concessionaire through the Ministry of Transport to contain the inconveniences in view of the summer season. But the Province of Savona also counts on Cuneo as an ally for the Millesimo toll booth, considered “an essential priority in the north-west logistical context”. The Ligurian administrators want the project to overturn the toll booth to be speeded up to make it more efficient and suited to traffic needs, starting with that which concerns the companies of Valbormida and the Lower Cuneo area. The concessionaire is ready to finance the works, but everything is blocked at the Ministry of the Environment: the environmental impact assessment is pending. «The case must be resolved quickly» concluded the two presidents, who aim to raise awareness of the Environment Minister Gilberto Pichetto.

On the railway front Cuneo and Savona ask for guarantees on the completion for the entire section of the upgrading of the Turin-Savona line, which is essential both to guarantee a greater frequency of passenger connections – in particular from a tourist perspective – and to adapt the line to European standards in freight transport, thus becoming to all intents and purposes an important key for the development of a logistics platform in the Cuneo area to support the port of Vado.
