Palermo, stop the use of drinking water to water plants

TO Palermo an ordinance arrives requiring it stop using drinking water to water plants on balconies and gardens. The drought continues to bite Sicily, and as summer approaches the administrations are running for cover by asking citizens to save water. This is the purpose of the provision signed by mayor Roberto Lagalla, with which it is done ban on the population resident in the municipal territory until the end of next December 31st or until notification of the emergency ceased to “use drinking water for water from five to 11 pm and from wash private vehicles, with the exclusion of car washes”.

Palermo, the ordinance on drinking water

Drinking water, in short, is too precious to be used in contexts other than human consumption. Precisely for this reason, always for the same period and for the same time slot, it is forbidden to “wash courtyards and squares and supply ornamental fountains, tanks and swimming pools, if not equipped with devices for the artificial water recycling“. The measure excludes “the uses of drinking water for business activities which require the use of drinking water, within the limits of what is authorized”.

The decisions of the Observatory for water uses

The news arrives a few days after meeting of the Observatory for water uses of the Basin Authority of the Sicilian Region, which had denied the need for rationing for the capital. According to the regional body, in fact, drinking water supplies are sufficient “until January 2025”, thanks to the provisions made on the initiative of the Observatory. Despite this, the water situation remains delicate, so much so that Palazzo delle Aquile has pushed for a crackdown on the use of drinking water for uses other than human consumption.
