Saturday 4 May Sassari joins the international “Jane’s Walk” festival

Conversations on foot and on the move along city streets. For the first time, the city of Sassari also joins the international “Jane’s Walk” festival which every year promotes city walks around the world to collectively observe, discuss and re-imagine the places where we spend a large part of our lives . “Jane’s Walk 2024: Walking for the Climate in Sassari” will be held on Saturday 4 May, at 4.30 pm, in the square of the old headquarters of the Gesù Buon Pastore church in via Ludovico Ariosto, for a duration of approximately two hours with a route that will take place within the Monte Rosello district.

The Jane’s Walk festival celebrates the figure of Jane Jacobs, an American scholar and activist who focused her academic research on the social and aggregative functions of the “street” and on how even a simple walk can be transformed into an opportunity for discussion and cultural exchange and reflection on city spaces.

Jane’s Walks are not guided tours of the city but, on the contrary, they aim to be a moment of dialogue and listening between participants on issues concerning public spaces and their use.

Sassari has also chosen to include its “Climate Walk” within the process of updating the Climate Change Adaptation Plan; Jane’s Walk Sassari 2024 aims to represent a unique opportunity to explore and discuss together the climate challenges that await us, identifying the vulnerabilities and strengths of the neighborhood we will pass through.

Participants will also have the opportunity to take part in a participatory mapping experience of the territory. Using your smartphone and an intuitive tool that can be downloaded, you will be able to detect potential vulnerable situations quickly and efficiently, but also highlight the area’s strengths in relation to climate risks such as heat waves, floods and droughts.

The update of the Climate Change Adaptation Plan, created by the Municipality of Sassari and financed by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, aims to develop actions and interventions for adaptation to climate change in our city. With the scientific support of the CMCC Foundation (Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change), the initiative aims to raise citizens’ awareness of climate risks and promote active and conscious participation of citizens in the co-definition of adaptation actions for the city.

The walk is reserved for adults and minors only if accompanied; participation is free and is free but it is necessary to register using the qrcode and the link on the Municipality website www.comune.sassari.it.

Each participant is required to respect the rules of the road, pay attention to walking along pavements and cross the road only at pedestrian crossings to ensure their own safety and that of other participants; evaluate your ability to participate safely, as the walking route may present difficulties for people with reduced mobility; take responsibility for your behavior and actions, paying maximum attention and acting prudently to ensure a safe and pleasant experience for everyone.
