The two attackers are husband and wife: the latter had arrived at the emergency room around two o’clock renal colic. Having received the green code, she was taken care of by doctors and nurses. Then the violence. First the man and then the woman gave in outburst, perhaps because they are tired of waiting for the times required by the protocols. The patient, in particular, attacked a social and healthcare worker who suffered a head injury which forced her, in turn, to seek medical attention. The entire scene was filmed by the video surveillance system cameras installed inside and outside the hospital.

After the attack, the couple fled on foot, with the woman escaping with the venous access needle still in her arm. Officers from the Pozzuoli Police Station intervened on site and acquired the images from the camerasthe testimonies of the victim’s colleagues and investigations were launched to trace the identity of the married couple. For the attacked operator, however, the doctors diagnosed a prognosis of two days.

The episode was reported by Manuel Ruggiero, president of the association «Hands off Hippocrates» who has been fighting for years for the protection and safety of medical and healthcare personnel and who has repeatedly asked for the introduction of police squads within hospital facilities. «We are exhausted, soon there will be no one willing to work in the local emergency. Today, in most assault prevention courses, we hear about de-escalation techniques, but there are people with whom it is difficult to even establish a dialogue in Italian, let alone how these could be implemented. Some people only understand complaints and prison bars» is Ruggiero’s outburst in light of the bulletin of attacks which in the ASL Napoli 2 Nord district alone has so far counted thirteen episodes of violence against doctors, nurses and OSS in the last three and a half months.
«The minister had announced a crackdown with more severe penalties and police presence in the emergency rooms, but unfortunately to date there have been no improvements – says Green MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli -. On the other hand, cases in which the attackers have been convicted for their actions are very rare and this effectively authorizes everyone to do as they please. The reduction of healthcare funding by the government is creating even more inconveniences and turning hospitals into battlefields. The wealthy can turn to private facilities while everyone else has fewer and fewer services. A shame”.
